He served as Poland’s prime minister from 2017 to 2023 and belongs to the Law and Justice party.

On Tuesday, Mateusz Morawiecki was elected president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), replacing Giorgia Meloni, who stepped down in December after four years in office.

“We are ready to work with all those who support the idea of returning power to sovereign nations. This goes far beyond centralizing power in the European Commission. This is wrong. We have already warned the Commission, and we will do everything possible to reverse this misguided trajectory,” he said.

Morawiecki, who served as Poland’s prime minister from 2017 to 2023 and belongs to the Law and Justice party, advocates for “Making Europe Great Again.” To achieve this goal, he aims to strengthen ties with both the United States and China.

“The European Union was much stronger with the United States when it worked in cooperation with that nation. We are different, we have distinct interests, and we will defend our European interests, but all of this must happen within the context of a new global strategic political situation,” he said.

“I believe we should cooperate with China as much as we can. This is a free world, particularly within the transatlantic community. We must work together peacefully, collaborating with one another,” said Morawiecki.

Regarding the potential request for membership in the party by “The Party Is Over” (SALF), he noted that two of its three Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are already part of the ultraconservative group in the European Parliament (EP) — although its leader, Luis Perez has not yet been accepted. The next step would likely be to formally request entry into the ECR party.

“This is the normal procedure, the same one that the Alliance for the Union of Romanians had to go through before joining the party. There is no news on this yet, although we have very good Spanish friends, like the Vox party — they are almost like our brothers,” he explained.

Currently, ECR is the fourth-largest group in the European Parliament, with 80 MEPs after the addition of SALF’s two representatives. Its two largest national delegations are Italy’s Brothers of Italy party and Poland’s Law and Justice party, with 24 and 20 representatives, respectively.

No longer part of the group, however, are the MEPs from Vox, who left ECR to join Patriots for Europe, the far-right group led by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This group is affiliated with Marine Le Pen’s French party and has become the third-largest bloc in the European Parliament.
